What Stevin gets out of Mixpanel

Mixpanel competes directly with Amplitude for product analytics. The difference is mostly in the pricing model and the developer experience. Mixpanel charges per Monthly Tracked User (MTU), Amplitude per event. For apps with many events per user Mixpanel is cheaper, for apps with many users and few events Amplitude is cheaper. We see teams pick based on what a colleague used somewhere else, not on their own event-to-user ratio. Do the math before you sign.

What you pair it with

For your stack: send events through the SDK directly, with user.identify() at login to link anonymous and known users. Combine it with Segment or your own event bus if you also want to send the same events elsewhere (data warehouse, attribution tool). Funnel analysis works best when you name events consistently in the past tense ('signup_completed' not 'complete signup'). Mixpanel's built-in A/B testing is fine but not on the level of dedicated tools like Optimizely or GrowthBook.

Common mistakes

• →Tracking anonymous and known without an identify call at the right moment, user journeys break in two
• →Creating events without properties, you cannot filter later by product tier or campaign
• →Letting MTU climb by counting bots or test accounts, the pricing tier jumps unexpectedly
• →Building cohort analysis on samples, Mixpanel samples by default on large queries, you have to switch that off explicitly
