Segment is a Customer Data Platform that, at its core, solves one problem: it keeps you from having to track the same event 15 times for 15 tools. One SDK call, Segment routes it to GA4, Mixpanel, Klaviyo, Facebook CAPI, and so on. For growing companies this is an instant win. For an SMB with 3 tools it is overkill, direct integrations are cheaper and simpler there. Since Twilio bought Segment the pricing structure has gotten stricter, so do the math up front and watch the MTU limits.

For your stack: Segment does not replace an analytics tool, it is a routing layer in front of it. Send events to Segment, Segment fans out to destinations. The key discipline: a tracking plan in a shared document, a naming convention for events, and versioned schemas so an SDK update does not quietly break data. Combine it with Protocols (Segment's own schema validation) once your team grows past 5 developers.
