Google Analytics 4

Analytics & Tracking

Google Analytics 4 is the standard for website analytics. It gives insight into user behavior, traffic sources and conversions. But only if it is set up well, and at many companies that is not the case.

What Stevin gets out of Google Analytics 4

In most accounts GA4 is technically installed but fundamentally set up wrong. Default conversions usually do not count what you want to measure (for example 'Generate Lead' on a form submit, while your real conversion is a qualified lead in your CRM). Data sampling on large properties hides exactly the detail that is meaningful. We use GA4 as traffic-source reporting and behavioral analysis, not as the attribution source for budget decisions. For that last part we go to the CRM or an MMM.

What you pair it with

Three technical things we fix as standard: server-side Google Tag Manager for tracking reliability (halving cookie loss of 20 to 40 percent), custom events that measure your funnel steps instead of Google's defaults, and a BigQuery connection so you can join GA4 data with CRM data. Only in BigQuery does GA4 become a real analysis tool instead of a dashboard.

Common mistakes

  • Counting conversions on the pageview of the thank-you page when that page does not always load (SPAs, redirects)
  • Reading 'engaged sessions' as conversions: Google's definition is 10 seconds, which is not engagement
  • Cross-domain tracking not set up for your checkout on a different subdomain, splitting sessions
  • Leaving data retention on the default 2 months when you need 14 months for year-over-year comparisons

Where do we use Google Analytics 4?

Measuring website traffic, conversions and user behavior.
